According to prominent researchers at UCLA, it has been nobly standing there for almost 2,000 years. One can only imagine how this California Oak has survived through the centuries to be considered one of the oldest in the world. In recent newspaper articles, Jack Bainbridge of SDG&E was quoted as saying that the transmission lines his company wants to put through the Pechanga's Great Oak Ranch will be around 200 feet from this ancient wonder, and should not harm the tree's roots. I am infuriated at this. How could he possibly think that 200 feet is enough of a buffer to protect this tree. This is a living, growing entity. This magnificent tree, an environmental wonder, continues to branch out and its roots continue to expand to keep it standing. It is surrounded by ancient burial grounds sacred to the Pechangas and it should remain undisturbed.

What kind of profit-driven company would run 200-foot steel towers with wires carrying 500,000 volts of electricity through such a national treasure? SDG&E is trying to take over our valley. They want to run these high-voltage wires through our yards, our parks, our vineyards and even over our schools. We must all stand united to fight this intrusion and make sure our message is loud and clear, "SDG&E, get out of our town!"

On the eve of an expected decision whether a high-voltage power line should be built
through Southwest County, the utility planning the project announced Wednesday
that it would no longer consider a route for the line through Pechanga land.
